Few kata embody the fighting spirit and heritage of Karate as powerfully as Bassai Dai. Literally meaning “To Storm or Penetrate the Fortress,” this form has been passed down through the hands of legends, Ankō Itosu, Kenwa Mabuni, Chōki Motobu, Kanki Izumikawa, and Shōgō Kuniba — before finding its home within the International Karate Kobudo Union (IKKU) under Soke Joseph R. Ruiz. It represents centuries of refinement, evolution, and unbroken tradition from Okinawa to modern Japan.

In its earliest roots, Bassai Dai was taught as a kata of courage, a physical manifestation of breaking through defenses and fear. Under Kiyoshi Aihara, Soke Ruiz first learned its disciplined Shotokan form in Hawaii, where it symbolized precision, perseverance, and inner strength. Later, through Kanki Izumikawa’s Goju-Shitō perspective and Shōgō Kuniba’s Motobu-Ha Shitō-Ryū, the kata grew into a complete study of balance: hardness and softness (Go and Ju), power and control, technique and intent.

Today, within the IKKU, Bassai Dai stands as more than a kata, it is a bridge between lineages. It embodies the energy of Okinawa’s Shuri-te, the refinement of Japanese Shitō-Ryū, and the adaptive realism of Motobu-Ha practice. Every sharp stance, turn, and strike tells a story of perseverance and unity, connecting modern practitioners to the masters who shaped the art generations ago.

When we perform Bassai Dai, we are not just training a kata, we are honoring the spirit of budō itself: the will to face obstacles, to grow through adversity, and to master the self. Within the IKKU, this kata reminds us that the greatest fortress to overcome is always within.

Kiyoshi Aihara (1932–2017), founder of the Zen Shoto Kai, Sensei Kiyoshi Aihara, a Waseda University graduate and direct student of Gichin Funakoshi, played a pivotal role in expanding the foundational training methods of Shotokan Karate. While Gigo Funakoshi developed the original Taikyoku Kata series (1–3) as introductory kata, Aihara recognized the need for greater progression between beginner and intermediate kata. Building on his teaching experience in Japan and later in Hawaii, he extended the series by creating Taikyoku 4–6 during his years at Waseda University in the early 1950s.

Taikyoku 7–10 (Shichidan–Judan) were developed and introduced by Sensei Kiyoshi Aihara between the late 1950s and early 1960s. As an extension of the simplified Taikyoku series, these kata added flowing directional complexity while reinforcing kihon. They became an early component of the beginner curriculum taught at the Butoku Karate Club in Honolulu and were later preserved and formalized within the IKKU system.

By the early 1960s, Taikyoku 7–10 were firmly integrated into the curriculum at the Butoku Karate Club and became staples among his students, including Soke Joseph Ruiz of the International Karate Kobudo Union (IKKU). These kata were a vital link between the more linear Taikyoku and the more complex Pinan series, effectively bridging gaps in coordination and flow for beginner-level practitioners. These kata were designed to expand the curriculum and challenge students with new embusen (movement lines), timing shifts, and directional transitions. Aihara’s unique approach emphasized balance, rhythm, and the “Odori” or dance-like flow characteristic of his advanced beginner forms.

Though less known outside of the IKKU and Aihara’s direct lineage, Taikyoku 7–10 remains a testament to his pedagogical innovation and creative legacy. They represent a functional yet graceful extension of the Shotokan system—forms that continue to be practiced, preserved, and passed on to future generations through Aihara’s students and the structured teaching systems they’ve maintained.

Due to the informal nature of kata transmission in the 1950s, Aihara’s contribution is not always widely cited in mainstream Shotokan texts. However, his students—including Soke Joseph Ruiz of the International Karate Kobudo Union (IKKU)—preserved and propagated these kata in Japan and Hawaii. Today, Taikyoku 4–10 remain essential to IKKU’s foundational curriculum and represent an innovative phase in Shotokan’s postwar karate evolution.

“These kata reflect Sensei Aihara’s deep understanding of how to gradually prepare students—not only physically but mentally—for the rigors of traditional Karate. They are elegant in their simplicity but powerful in their application.”
— Soke Joseph Ruiz, Founder IKKU

Soke Ruiz learned this kata series as a youth while studying under Aihara and has generously shared the kata knowledge with the IKKU members during previous seminars and camps. Our organization is lucky to have this elite Taikyoku Series to offer to our members.

We hope you enjoy the exposure to this rare traditional karate kata series.

Preserving Tradition, Embracing the Future

From the earliest days of Karate—when the art was cloaked in secrecy and passed down only through spoken instruction—training was a privilege reserved for the dedicated few. There were no written manuals, and students were forbidden to take notes. Every detail had to be memorized exactly as taught, often during private sessions under the cover of night, as Karate was not openly practiced in public.

This legacy of discretion remained deeply embedded in our tradition for centuries. Prior to the 1920s, no books documented Karate, and the technology to capture it—photography and film—was costly, rare, and inaccessible to the public. As a result, Okinawan Karate remained isolated and largely unknown to the outside world.

Today, times have changed. And so has the way we share our art.

A Historic First: The IKKU Kata Video Series

It is our honor to announce a groundbreaking project—the IKKU KoToSu-Ha Shito-Ryu Kata Video Series—authorized by Soke Joseph Ruiz for our union, members, and supporters worldwide.

For the first time, the kata of KoToSu-Ha Shito-Ryu will be made available online. Until now, these techniques could only be learned firsthand at an IKKU-sanctioned dojo or official event. This release marks a rare opportunity to witness, study, and preserve the unique expression of our art.

What Makes Our Shito-Ryu Unique

Our Shito-Ryu lineage has been shaped by the influence of Kiyoshi Aihara Sensei, Kanki Izumikawa Sensei, and Shogo Kuniba Sensei, with subtle yet distinct threads of Katsu-Ryu Kempo woven throughout. This fusion gives our practice a character and depth that stands apart within the world of Karate.

Launching with the Pinan 1-5 Kata Series

We begin this journey with a special feature: the Pinan 1-5 kata series (Shodan through Godan). Filmed in the early to mid-1990s at Soke Joseph Ruiz’s hombu dojo in Augusta, GA, these recordings offer both technical precision and historical significance.

Each kata is presented in full, accompanied by context that explains its history, purpose, and place within our curriculum.
