This is the rice-harvesting hand sickle which has a short blade set at right angles to a hardwood handle that thickens towards the butt end It is an implement that can be found all over Southern Asia and Japan. For combat purposes it sometimes took the upgraded from ofa Kama-Yari, a spear with a hooked blade, and it is related to the Kusari-gama, a sickle attached to a weighted length of fine chain. he weapon was used either singly or in pairs entirely for close work where it could slash, hook, rake, chop, deflect, or block in a wide range of basic combination tactics. With the increasing sport orientation of modem karate the use of the Kama is fast dying out and its survival is limited to a few kata or training forms using wooden practice weapons.
